Leaked UK Sport documents obtained by the BBC have revealed a long list of international sporting events the body hopes to secure for Britain, including what would be a fifth hosting of the Tour de France.
The race was first held in the country in 1974, then returned 20 years later and again in 2007. It began in Yorkshire in 2014, with the first three stages taking place there prior to a transfer back to France.
The race looked set to begin in London this year but just before that Grand Depart was confirmed, the-then city Mayor Boris Johnson pulled the plug. He was concerned at costs estimated at £35 million. Instead the race started in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Cycling is hugely popular in Britain. It is unclear from the document obtained by the BBC if such a visit would see the race begin there, or instead host stages during the event.
