Ulissi beats Yates to win Circuito de Getxo Memorial Ricardo Otxoa

by VeloClub

Diego Ulissi bounced back from 43rd place in Saturday’s San Sebastian Classic by winning the Circuito de Getxo Memorial Ricardo Otxoa on Sunday, netting the first Spanish victory of his career in the process.

He finished one second clear of Simon Yates (Orica-BikeExchange) and José Herrada (Movistar), and five seconds ahead of a chasing trio led in by Angel Madrazo (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA). It was the 13th season victory of Ulissi’s Lampre-Merida team.

The squad was represented in the day’s first breakaway via Mario Costa, and again in a subsequent 16 man move which went clear afterwards. Ulissi was there, as were teammates Manuele Mori and Matteo Bono. These stayed clear until the last of the event’s ten 17 kilometre laps, with Ulissi proving best on the uphill drag to the line.

“My fitness is good and, thanks to the support from my team mates, I succeeded in exploiting the good feelings I had today,” he said after the finish. “In the first part of the course I pedalled in the bunch, saving energy, then I joined the decisive attack. The presence of Mori and Bono in this breakaway was very important.

“The final kilometre was very suited to my characteristics and I couldn’t miss the victory.”
