US State Department issues travel alert around Tour de France

by CyclingTips

The US Department of State has issued a travel warning for Americans traveling to Europe this summer, particularly for France.

Tour de France 2005 - 2e etappe

The alert comes alongside reports that the French government will be increasing security presence at the upcoming European Soccer Championships beginning next week and for the Tour de France in July, due to concerns over terrorism.

“France has extended its state of emergency through July 26 to cover the period of the soccer championship, as well as the Tour de France,” the alert said.

“The large number of tourists visiting Europe in the summer months will present greater targets for terrorists planning attacks in public locations, especially at large events.”

Previous reports said that the French police will have 23,000 police for this year’s Tour de France, including special intervention squads, in response to extremist threats.
