Valverde to miss Paris-Nice due to illness

by CyclingTips

Another top rider will not start Paris-Nice, the first major European stage race on the calendar. The Movistar team confirmed that Alejandro Valverde is battling a virus and high fever.

Alejandro recently won the overall at the Ruta del Sol.

Team Sky’s Wout Poels announced yesterday that he was not racing due to a knee injury.

Valverde last raced Paris-Nice in 2012, winning a stage and finishing third overall. He was coming into the ‘Race to the Sun’ having won the overall at the Ruta del Sol.

The team said that Víctor de la Parte will replace Valverde.

Movistar is having a lot of trouble with illness as the team also said Daniele Bennati will not race Strade Bianche Saturday for the same reason.
