Giro Rosa Anna vd Breggen

Van Vleuten takes Giro Rosa TT stage win as riders are surprised by steep climbs

by Jeanine Laudy

The stage was won by Annemiek van Vleuten (Orica-Scott) in a time of 25:29, 41 seconds ahead of overall race leader Anna van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans). Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle High5) was third, just one minute and 15 seconds behind van Vleuten, to move into second overall.

Several riders were frustrated with Giro Rosa organizers, with the road book offering a hilly profile, but nothing too serious. However, the riders that did a recon soon found out that the course in no way looked like the stage profile on paper. Some riders even had to walk up the climbs during their recon, too steep to stay on their bikes.

“The course was a very tough one,” Longo Borghini said. “The climbs were very hard, and the final one was up to 30% which hurt a lot!”
