Vincenzo Nibali wins the Tour of Croatia

by CyclingTips

Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) has taken out overall honours in the Tour of Croatia after wresting back control on the final stage of the six-stage UCI 2.1 event.

Nibali had gone into the weekend in the overall lead after finishing in the bunch on stage 4 to take the lead from Jaime Roson (Caja Rural-Seguros). His lead was just a tenuous one though — two seconds — and when Roson won on the uphill finish to stage 5 — just edging out Nibali — Roson moved back into the overall lead.

But on the final stage, Nibali won the first intermediate sprint time bonus to take back the virtual lead, then put a few seconds into Roson at the finish to win the race overall. The stage was won by Nibali’s compatriot Sacha Modolo (UAE Team Emirates) who won convincingly on the uphill finish on cobbled streets in Zagreb.

Nibali dedicated his victory to his fallen friend Michele Scarponi.

“This win is for Michele, for a great friend; he was like a brother for me,” Nibali said. “The last two days have been difficult and everyone can understand why. I raced with sadness in my heart, even if my form was good. I wanted to win for Michele.”
