Italian sprinter Elia Viviani could leave Team Sky before the Vuelta a España, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Viviani was overlooked for both the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France due to Team Sky’s GC aspirations. The Olympic omnium champion desperately wants to race a Grand Tour in 2017, and with the possibility that Chris Froome may return to the Vuelta, Viviani has been exploring other options. La Gazzetta reports that he has agreed to a two-year deal with Giuseppe Saronni’s UAE Emirates team.
Signing Viviani to lead his sprint team would present an interesting situation for Saronni, as the UAE squad also has sprinters Sacha Modolo and Ben Swift.
Though Viviani is contracted through 2018, La Gazzetta reported that conditions exist in his contract stipulating that if he is unhappy with his program, he may leave his contract one year early.
