Vos, Aerts victorious at GP Sven Nys

by CyclingTips

Toon Aerts (Telenet-Fidea) and Marianne Vos (WM3 Energie) have rung in the new year in style, taking victory at the GP Sven Nys cyclocross meet in Baal, Belgium.

Mathieu van der Poel (Beobank-Corendon) didn’t take part in the men’s race, after his nasty crash at Azencross last week, but world champion Wout van Aert (Vérandas Willems-Crelan) was in attendance. Van Aert rode cautiously to begin with, as Aerts, the European champion, rode away to victory in freezing conditions.

Aerts finished eight seconds ahead of Van Aert while Michael Vanthourenhout (Marlux-Napoleon Games) was a further five seconds back in third.

In the women’s race, the seventh round of the IJsboerke Ladies Trophy, seven-time CX world champion Marianne Vos emerged victorious after a spirited battle with Ellen Van Loy (Telenet-Fidea). Van Loy made the early running, holding off Vos, Sanne Cant (Enertherm-BKCP) and eventual third-place finisher Thalita De Jong (Lares-Waowdeals), before Vos rode clear in the final lap.
