Track riders shone on the opening stages of the Mitchelton Tour of Gippsland on Thursday, with Sam Welsford and Rebecca Wiasak taking 2017 Subaru National Road Series (NRS) honours in Inverloch.
Australian rider Rebecca Wiasak (High5 Dream Team) used the same class which earned her the 2015 and 2016 individual pursuit world championship titles when she took the first stage. She beat reigning under 23 national champion Nicola Macdonald (NSWIS) plus the former dual national champion Kim Wells (Holden Women’s Racing).
Fellow Australian Welsford (Mitchelton Scott – The Australian National Track Endurance Team) was best in the men’s event. The Olympic silver medallist and reigning team pursuit world champion beat Subaru NRS leader Michael Freiberg (Isowhey Sports SwissWellness) and Sean Whitfield (Olivers Racing).
The race lasts four days, with the remaining stages to take place in Sale, Bairnsdale and Traralgon. It is the final event in the women’s Subaru NRS season and the penultimate race for the men.
