Win your commute with Tour de Bike Lane

by CyclingTips

A Facebook group called “Tour de Bike Lane” has members randomly pop up at a busy bike lane and cheer on fellow cyclists as if it were the Champs Élysées on a certain Sunday in July.

David Confer came up with the idea when he moved to Washington, DC in 2005 from New York and found the city’s bike community to be “fragmented and cliquey.”

“[In New York] riders know each other. It’s tight. In the District, it was just couriers and commuters, but no community.”

After starting a series of social rides like Critical Mass, Color of Cycling and Showdown Sprints, he decided to start something new.

Since the inaugural Tour de Bike Lane a year ago with about 10 other people, the cheer squad has grown to around 60 people. “It totally makes my day,” Confer said. “That’s why I do it.”
