Yohann Gene wins fifth stage of La Tropicale Amissa Bongo, takes lead

by Mark Zalewski

Yohann Gene (Direct Energie) won the fifth stage of La Tropicale Amissa Bongo out of a breakaway group of 12. The French rider from the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe also takes over the race lead from Stanislau Bazhkou (Minsk Cycling Club).

“This is the fourth time I have won here in Kango,” said Gene. “My experience on these roads allowed me to win today. This morning I announced that I would try to get into all the breakaways because I was thirty seconds behind the leader in the overall, and I knew I would be less of a threat because I was not really dangerous for the yellow jersey.

“Bazhkou could not watch everyone in the breakaway. I knew that if I could take 30 seconds, it would be over for him. With this heat and these difficult roads one does not recover easily.”

Gene took more than the 30 seconds he needed, with the break finishing more than nine minutes ahead of the peloton. The overall winner is almost guaranteed to come out of that breakaway, with Gene enjoying a 16 second lead on a trio of riders.
